Why can't I see any organisms in Experiment 3.1?

If you have trouble seeing organisms in this experiment, it is usually because of lack of patience or improper focus.

  • Make sure you stay at LOW POWER while you scan the slide. Scan it SLOWLY, looking for little dots that move. When you find them, ONLY THEN should you go to higher magnification. You will spend the vast majority of the time at low magnification.
  • To focus at the proper level, make sure that some of the food (egg yolk, rice bits, etc.) gets into the dropper and onto the slide. Then, focus (at LOW MAGNIFICATION) on the food. Once the food is in focus, don’t change the focus. Just scan the slide.
